Microsoft opened pre-orders Wednesday for the Surface Laptop Ultra, which it calls its most powerful Surface Laptop ever, and the machine carries a starting price of CAD $3,899.99 on Microsoft’s Canadian Surface site. In a Windows devices blog post, Surface corporate vice-president Brett Ostrum said availability begins Oct. 16, with pre-orders through Microsoft.com and select retailers. Canadian tech site Geeking Out also lists Oct. 16 as the Canadian release date.

According to The Verge, the base configuration has an 18-core processor, 24 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, while the top configuration has a 20-core processor, 128 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. Microsoft’s Canadian page lists only the $3,899.99 starting price; Canadian prices for higher configurations were not shown in the materials reviewed for this story.

The laptop is built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark Superchip, which combines an Nvidia Blackwell RTX graphics processor with up to 6,144 cores, an Nvidia Grace CPU with up to 20 cores and up to 128 GB of unified memory shared between the CPU and GPU. Microsoft says it can run AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters locally, with up to one petaflop of AI performance; a footnote says that figure is based on theoretical FP4 performance using a sparsity feature. The Verge describes RTX Spark as an Arm-based chip and says Microsoft and Nvidia are positioning these laptops at the very premium end of the market, with the Surface model aimed at Apple’s MacBook Pro.

The 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen reaches a peak HDR brightness of 2,000 nits measured over a 10 per cent window, according to Microsoft, which claims up to 25 per cent brighter peak HDR than a MacBook Pro M5 based on published specifications. Microsoft notes the touchscreen does not support the Surface Pen. The chassis is under 18 mm thin and weighs under 4.5 lb, and the company says a new thermal design delivers up to 2.5 times the thermal power capacity of its current Surface Laptops. The haptic touchpad is 30 per cent larger, storage is user-removable, and the laptop comes in Platinum and Nightfall.

A new feature called Magnetic Connect builds magnetic charging into a standard USB-C port on the right side; the included cable snaps on and releases easily, and the port still handles video, data and other USB-C devices, Microsoft says. The Verge lists three USB-C ports, an HDMI port, a single USB-A port, a full-size SD card reader and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The laptop can drive up to three 4K displays.

Microsoft’s Canadian page advertises up to CAD $1,300 back for trading in a MacBook. Under the terms in Microsoft’s blog post, the offer runs from Oct. 7 to Nov. 23, 2026, applies only through the Microsoft Store online in the United States and Canada, and requires an eligible MacBook Pro that powers on, holds a charge and is in fully functional condition. Trade-ins are inspected by Teladvance, and the amount varies by device and condition. Commercial configurations are also available for pre-order.

Microsoft also opened pre-orders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact desktop for developers built on the same Nvidia platform with up to 128 GB of unified memory and preloaded tools such as Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub Copilot and WSL. At launch it is sold only through Microsoft.com in the U.S., with shipping to begin in November; Microsoft has not announced Canadian pricing or availability, and Geeking Out notes that it is not launching in Canada at first.

Microsoft did not reveal updates to its regular Surface models alongside the Ultra, Geeking Out reported. Prices and availability are as listed by Microsoft Canada on Oct. 7 and may change.
