OpenAI used its DevDay 2026 keynote on Tuesday to push ChatGPT beyond chat windows, unveiling Dots — always-on AI agents that keep working after a user gives an instruction — alongside a cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol model and a slate of developer tools.
Dots run on GPT-6 Astra with their own cloud computer and browser, can follow up on recurring tasks, and can reach users across ChatGPT, text messages, email and Slack. OpenAI showed examples ranging from dinner planning tied to a calendar to helping launch a website, and said users can set permission rules that require confirmation before sensitive actions. Initial access is limited to ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise seats.
The company also introduced GPT-6.1 Sol for coding and professional workloads with a 1.05-million-token context window, Codex Cloud for coding jobs that keep running when a laptop sleeps, ChatGPT Space for shared team projects, new Agents and Decisions APIs, and ChatGPT Pro 500 — a US$500-a-month plan with the highest included usage and Astra Ultrafast access.
For Canadian developers and IT buyers already deep into ChatGPT Business seats, DevDay’s message is clear: the competitive fight is shifting from single-prompt answers to persistent agents that touch calendars, inboxes and repos — with the safety and permission model becoming as important as the model scoreboard.
