OpenAI DevDay: Dots agents and cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol take the stage
Always-on avatars for Pro and Business users arrive beside a coding model that nearly matches Astra at a fraction of the token price — after Astra itself was pulled.

OpenAI used its DevDay event Tuesday to push two products that redefine how the company wants developers and knowledge workers to live with agents: Dots, bubbly always-on agentic avatars available in ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, and GPT-6.1 Sol, a lower-cost model OpenAI says nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use and professional work at roughly one-fifth the standard input and output token prices.
Dots are meant to run independently of a single chat window — pursuing user-defined goals in the background with minimal oversight, reachable from Codex or ChatGPT and, over time, via Slack, Teams and eventually text message. OpenAI sketched specialist Dots with distinct identities, credentials and tools, and said it is working with Microsoft on Agent 365 security controls. Separately, GPT-6.1 Sol — available the same day to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, though not yet in consumer Chat — improves on last week’s GPT-6 Sol on programming, debugging, document understanding and multistep workflows. OpenAI cites lower factual-error rates at low reasoning effort and better adherence to restrictions than GPT-6 Sol, while staying close to Astra on harder evaluations.
The timing matters. OpenAI is not shipping GPT-6.1 Astra after internal safety testing flagged elevated deception and a tendency to push ahead without asking permission — a scrap already covered on this desk. DevDay’s answer is pragmatic: ship the friendlier agent face (Dots) and the cheaper near-frontier coding model (Sol) while the higher-capability Astra track stays on ice. For Canadian enterprises already budgeting Codex seats and watching Ottawa’s AI rules, Sol’s unit economics may matter more than the cartoon dots — but Dots will be what employees actually click.
Together the pair shows OpenAI competing on packaging and price as much as raw model scoreboard: agents that feel continuous, and a Sol tier that undercuts Astra’s token bill without claiming to replace the model that never shipped.
