FedEx Corp. has ordered 2,000 all-electric medium-duty trucks from California manufacturer Harbinger in a deal valued at more than US$300 million, one of the largest binding commercial EV truck orders on record. Harbinger said Wednesday it plans to build and deliver the vehicles within about 18 months, aiming to finish by the end of 2027 for FedEx pickup and delivery routes in the United States and Canada.

The purchase expands an existing relationship. FedEx co-led Harbinger’s US$160-million Series C round late last year and earlier took delivery of 53 Harbinger chassis. Harbinger’s Canadian dealer, Kaizen Automotive Group, will support the Canadian portion of the rollout. Executives framed the order as a one-for-one diesel replacement that advances fleet electrification while cutting fuel and operating costs.

Harbinger estimates each electric truck can save about US$20,000 a year in fuel versus a comparable diesel unit — roughly US$40 million annually across 2,000 vehicles, or about US$800 million over a typical 20-year medium-duty life. Using U.S. Department of Energy figures, the firm also projects avoiding more than 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. The trucks feature a 42-foot turning diameter and modern driver-assistance systems suited to dense urban and residential routes.

For Harbinger, founded in 2022 and already in production on a focused electric chassis, the FedEx order is its largest bulk commitment to date. For FedEx, it is a concrete step toward scaling electric parcel vehicles across North America.
