BMO becomes first Canadian Mastercard issuer with embedded commercial payments
Eligible Corporate Card clients in Canada and the U.S. can initiate virtual-card payouts inside ERP, procurement, AP and travel platforms via Mastercard Commercial Express.

Bank of Montreal and Mastercard have launched an embedded commercial-payments capability that lets eligible BMO Corporate Card clients start and manage virtual-card payments inside the enterprise software they already use — making BMO the first Mastercard issuer in Canada to offer the experience, according to coverage of a Thursday press release.
PYMNTS and FinTech Global report the integration covers ERP, procurement, accounts-payable and travel-management platforms in Canada and the United States. When a participating vendor enables the feature, treasury and AP teams can initiate, approve and reconcile supplier invoices, travel bookings and corporate expenses without jumping to a separate banking portal. The plumbing runs on Mastercard’s Commercial Express framework, a common path for software platforms to plug in issuer-backed virtual cards.
BMO’s Seth Blacher, head of TPS product management and payments modernization, said clients digitizing operations “expect us to integrate seamlessly into their existing workflows,” arguing the partnership removes friction between finance software and payment execution. Mastercard Canada’s Diane Miquelon, senior vice president for financial institutions partnerships, said embedding virtual cards where finance teams already work improves security and working-capital predictability through spend controls and automated reconciliation data.
For Canadian mid-market and enterprise finance teams, the launch is a concrete step in the embedded-finance race: fewer swivel-chair payments, tighter card controls and a Canadian issuer staking an early claim on Mastercard’s commercial software channel — provided their ERP or AP vendor is on the participating list.
