Israeli strike kills Hamas northern Gaza commander Izz al-Din al-Beik

An Israeli air strike early Tuesday killed Izz al-Din al-Beik, head of Hamas’s armed wing in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian and Israeli officials said.
The strike hit an apartment building in Gaza City’s Nassr neighbourhood. Hamas confirmed the death. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement saying the military had killed al-Beik. Al-Shifa Hospital said another person later died of wounds from the attack. Al-Beik had taken command of the Qassam Brigades in northern Gaza after the death of senior commander Ahmed al-Ghandour.
Israel says it has killed at least 20 Hamas members this month, including senior commanders and people it alleged took part in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack or held Israeli captives. Hamas accuses Israel of undermining the U.S.-backed ceasefire agreed last October. Gaza’s Health Ministry says more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since that ceasefire took effect; Israel says four of its soldiers were also killed. Palestinian authorities put the overall death toll since October 2023 above 74,000.
