Google Maps Immersive Navigation finally makes messy exits readable in the car
After two weeks of daily commuting tests, Tom’s Guide finds the 3D depth and smart-zoom view on CarPlay and Android Auto cuts panic at multi-lane splits — if the underlying traffic data stays sharp.

Google Maps Immersive Navigation is the rare map update that changes how a drive feels. Available on Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and the standalone Maps app, the 3D view adds real depth to overpasses and elevated ramps so drivers can tell whether they are above or below a crossing route — a long-standing weak spot on flat 2D car screens.
In a hands-on review published this week, Tom’s Guide’s John Velasco put the feature through roughly two weeks of commuting, including complex New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway splits. He found “smart zoom” pulls back on open stretches to show traffic colour changes early, then punches in tight before merges and intricate off-ramps so lane choice is clearer before the exit disappears.
The visual overhaul only helps if routing and traffic stay trustworthy. Velasco still defaults to Google Maps over Apple Maps, Waze and TomTom for real-time congestion reroutes, speed-trap alerts and community hazard reports — and says Immersive Navigation made confusing freeway exits “effortless” enough that he no longer wants to go back.
For Canadian drivers who bounce between iPhone CarPlay one week and Android Auto the next, the cross-platform rollout matters as much as the graphics: the same immersive guidance follows whichever phone is plugged in. Immersive Navigation will not fix bad road data, but it does fix the glanceable geometry problem that still trips people up at multi-level interchanges from Toronto to Vancouver.
