Wireless earbuds have caught up with headphones. Between $200 and $400 CAD you get strong noise cancelling, clear call mics, wireless charging and six to ten hours of listening per charge. Lab reviewers now rate some mid-priced pairs close to the flagships. Your phone still matters most. AirPods unlock their best features on an iPhone, Galaxy Buds on a Samsung, and brands like Sony and Soundcore work equally well with both. We only included earbuds sold in Canada, with prices we saw on Canadian retailer pages on 5 October 2026. We also scored each pair on what it's like to own: Canadian customer ratings, recurring defects, warranty service and firmware. That changed the order. Sony's WF-1000XM6 leads the lab tests, but Canadian buyers rate it just 3.6 out of 5, mostly over battery problems. The cheaper Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro scores almost as well in the lab and much better with owners.

Quick picks

Overall winner

Anker Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro · D1203 (Amazon.ca listing sold by AnkerDirect-CA)

The Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro is RTINGS' best mid-range earbud, and RTINGS says its noise cancelling comes close to the Sony WF-1000XM6. Wirecutter also picked it as its top wireless earbuds. It works equally well with iPhone and Android, with LDAC, three-device multipoint, IP55 water resistance and wireless charging, and Amazon.ca listed it at $199.98 when we checked, about $100 less than the Sony. Canadian owners rate it 4.4 out of 5 from 1,316 ratings, and Soundcore's 18-month warranty is longer than Apple's, Sony's or Samsung's. It isn't flawless: some owners blame firmware 5.51 for connection drops. The AirPods Pro 3 score higher overall, but only on an iPhone, and the Sony WF-1000XM6 is the better performer if you can live with its weaker reliability record.

What to buy

Start with your phone. On an iPhone, the AirPods Pro 3 are the easiest choice. On a recent Samsung Galaxy, the Galaxy Buds4 Pro unlock Samsung-only features. On anything else, or if you switch between platforms, get the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro, or the Sony WF-1000XM6 if you take lots of calls. For running and the gym, the ear hooks on the Powerbeats Pro 2 matter more than any spec. If you want to spend less or need something specific, here are a few pairs we saw on Amazon.ca on 5 October 2026 but didn't score: the Sony WF-C710N ($98.00, 3.9 out of 5 from 1,528 ratings), the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 for Pixel owners ($219.00, 4.0 out of 5 from 478 ratings) and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) for maximum noise blocking ($379.00, 4.0 out of 5 from 3,416 ratings). Whatever you buy, try every ear-tip size before you judge the sound, keep the charging contacts clean, and test battery life on both buds within the return window. Prices change often, so check before you buy.

How we chose

We started from current lab-tested recommendations: SoundGuys' best wireless earbuds (updated 11 September 2026), RTINGS' best wireless earbuds (2026), What Hi-Fi's WF-1000XM6 review, and reviews from TechRadar, Tom's Guide, PCMag and CNET. We confirmed each model is sold in Canada, using Canadian model numbers where the listing showed one, through Amazon.ca and Apple Canada. Each pair gets two scores out of 10. The lab score covers sound, noise cancelling, call quality, battery life and features for the money. The ownership score covers what it's like to live with: the average customer rating and number of ratings on Amazon.ca, recurring defect complaints from owners on Reddit, brand forums and retailer reviews (battery fade, one bud dying, charging and case faults, connection drops), the Canadian warranty and how claims work, and how good and how well-updated the app and firmware are. The overall score is 60% lab and 40% ownership, and each pick gets a reliability verdict: Strong, Average, Weak, or Not confirmed when we couldn't find enough Canadian ratings or owner reports. Owner reports are anecdotes, not failure rates, so we look for patterns rather than single complaints. Amazon.ca ratings often pool colours and can include reviews from other countries. We allow no more than two picks from one brand (we count Beats as Apple). We list a price only when we saw it on a Canadian retailer page, with the date we checked. Anything we couldn't confirm is marked as not confirmed. Best Buy Canada wasn't checked.

FAQ

Are wireless earbuds reliable, and what warranty do you get in Canada?

Batteries are the weak point. Earbud batteries are tiny and wear out after a few years of daily charging, and the most common owner complaint across all our picks is one bud that drains faster, stops charging or dies. Warranties in Canada are short. Apple (including Beats), Sony and Samsung give one year, and Soundcore gives 18 months for headphones. Apple is the easiest to claim with, because Apple Stores can swap a faulty bud over the counter. Sony, Samsung and Soundcore mostly use mail-in or service-centre repairs. Keep your receipt, test both buds' battery life in the first couple of weeks while you can still return them, and register the product.

Do AirPods work with Android phones?

Yes, but only as basic Bluetooth earbuds. You lose automatic switching, most settings, heart-rate features and Live Translation. On Android, the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro, Sony WF-1000XM6 or, on a Samsung phone, the Galaxy Buds4 Pro are better choices.

What is multipoint, and do I need it?

Multipoint keeps earbuds connected to two devices at once, such as a phone and a laptop, so a call can interrupt your music without re-pairing. The Sony connects to two devices and the Soundcore to up to three. The Galaxy Buds4 Pro only auto-switch between Samsung devices, and AirPods switch between Apple devices on the same iCloud account.

Do codecs like LDAC matter?

Only on Android. iPhones use AAC, so LDAC doesn't help there. Many Android phones support LDAC, which can sound better over Bluetooth, but it can also make the connection less stable. Soundcore suggests turning LDAC off if you get dropouts.

Why isn't the highest-rated pair in the lab our top pick?

The Sony WF-1000XM6 tops the lab tests, but Canadian Amazon.ca buyers rate it 3.6 out of 5, and owners report battery and charging faults. Because 40% of our score is about ownership, it falls just behind the cheaper Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro. It's still the one to get if call quality and sound matter most, as long as you check the battery while you can still return it.
