A good washer should last a decade or more, so a few hundred dollars up front matters less than how well it cleans, how much water and electricity it uses, and what happens when something breaks. In Canada, full-size front-loaders now cost about $1,100 to $1,250, and a big high-efficiency top-loader costs about $900. We only included washers sold in Canada, using Canadian model numbers and Canadian capacity ratings, with prices we saw on Canadian retailer pages on 5 October 2026. Watch the capacity: Canadian listings use the IEC rating, so the same drum that's 4.5 cu. ft. in the U.S. is listed as 5.2 cu. ft. here. Half of each score covers what a washer is like to own: Canadian customer ratings, common faults, the Canadian warranty and service. That's why the Electrolux ELFW7637AW is our top pick. It cleans better than anything else in the major tests, Canadian buyers rate it 4.8 out of 5, and its warranty covers the tub for life. LG has the better brand reliability record, but its newest Canadian front-loader has too few owner reviews to confirm yet.

Quick picks

Overall winner

Electrolux ELFW7637AW Front Load Perfect Steam Washer · ELFW7637AW (White, Canadian model; Reviewed tested the Titanium ELFW7637AT)

The Electrolux ELFW7637AW is the strongest cleaner in the major tests. Reviewed ranks it the best washer it has tested, and Wirecutter found it removed the largest share of stains on a cold Normal cycle while treating fabrics as gently as the LG. In Canada it's a 5.2 cu. ft. IEC machine that uses 85 kWh a year. Canadian Appliance Source listed it at $1,243 when we checked, and Leon's at $1,245. Canadian buyers rate it 4.8 out of 5 from 866 reviews on Meubles Sinray, and its 10-year motor and lifetime tub warranty is the best long-term coverage among our picks. It isn't perfect. It has no Wi-Fi, its cycles run about 10 minutes longer than LG's, and Wirecutter and Consumer Reports rate Electrolux's reliability and service below LG's. Pick the LG WM4100HWA if you want app control, faster cycles and the brand with the best reliability record, and are willing to bet on a model with few owner reviews so far.

Best overall

Electrolux ELFW7637AW Front Load Perfect Steam Washer

ELFW7637AW (White, Canadian model; Reviewed tested the Titanium ELFW7637AT)

Score 8.4/10

CA$1243.00

Price checked October 5, 2026

Pros

  • The best cleaner in the major tests: Reviewed's top washer overall, and Wirecutter found it removed the largest share of stains on a cold Normal cycle
  • Canadian buyers rate it highly: 4.8 out of 5 from 866 reviews on Meubles Sinray's site, and Leon's shows 10,150 ratings
  • The best long-term warranty here: 10 years on the motor and a lifetime warranty on the tub, plus a reversible door, a drum light and a pod-friendly dispenser

Cons

  • Wirecutter and Consumer Reports rate Electrolux's reliability record below LG's, and Wirecutter calls its service only 'okay', with fewer technicians outside big cities
  • Wirecutter found its Normal cycle about 10 minutes longer than the LG's
  • No Wi-Fi or app, and labour is only covered for the first year

Best front-load for smart features and fast cycles

LG WM4100HWA / WM4100HBA Front Load Washer with AI DD and TurboWash 360

WM4100HWA (White) / WM4100HBA (Black Steel), Canadian models. They appear to be the Canadian counterparts of the U.S. WM4000H that Wirecutter tested (same TurboWash 360, AI DD, steam and 27 x 39 x 30.25 in. cabinet), but LG doesn't say so: Not confirmed

Score 8/10

CA$1245.00

Price checked October 5, 2026

Pros

  • LG has the best reliability record for front-loaders in Consumer Reports' brand surveys, and Wirecutter has picked the closely related WM4000H as its top washer since 2022
  • TurboWash 360 gives some of the shortest effective cycles Wirecutter has tested (about 43 minutes for a 12 lb load on the U.S. model), and it's gentle on fabrics
  • Wi-Fi with the ThinQ app (remote start, energy monitoring, Smart Diagnosis), steam, an Allergiene cycle and a 10-year direct-drive motor warranty

Cons

  • Hardly any Canadian owner reviews yet (LG.ca shows 2), so model-specific reliability isn't confirmed
  • Wirecutter says LG's customer service is known to be 'taxing', with long waits
  • The tub is only covered for 3 years, and the U.S. version's control panel is hard to read in the dark (Wirecutter)

Best top-load and best value

LG WT8200CW Top Load Impeller Washer with EasyUnload and TurboWash

WT8200CW (Alpine White), Canadian model; also sold in Platinum Black. LG rates it at 5.8 cu. ft. in Canada and 5.0 cu. ft. in the U.S.

Score 7.3/10

CA$895.00

Price checked October 5, 2026

Pros

  • CNET's top-load pick: one of only two machines in its tests that the tester had no complaints about, with clothes 'notably cleaner than our last washing machine'
  • The cheapest pick at $895, with a huge 5.8 cu. ft. tub, an angled EasyUnload front for easier reach, and a soft-close glass lid
  • LG has the best reliability record for high-efficiency top-loaders in Consumer Reports' surveys, and the direct-drive motor has a 10-year warranty

Cons

  • Uses much more water than a front-loader (IWF 4.3, CNET estimates about 83% more than the Electrolux), and its spin is only 800 rpm, so clothes take longer to dry
  • Some residue was left in CNET's stain tests, and owners of LG impeller top-loaders complain about low water levels (use Deep Fill for bulky loads)
  • No steam, can't be stacked, and needs 57 in. of height with the lid open

Best for warranty coverage and tough stains

Maytag MHW5630HW Front Load Washer with Extra Power

MHW5630HW (White), Canadian listing. Canada rates it at 5.2 cu. ft. IEC; the U.S. lists 4.5 cu. ft. DOE

Score 7.5/10

CA$1199.99

Price checked October 5, 2026

Pros

  • CNET gave it one of only two perfect scores: it removed all the test stains without pretreating
  • The best long-term parts cover among the mainstream brands: the direct-drive motor and stainless wash basket are covered for 10 years
  • Extra Power button, internal heater, steam and a 12-hour Fresh Spin option; very popular, with 4,851 ratings at The Brick

Cons

  • Less efficient than the Electrolux and LG front-loaders (CNET: roughly 73% more electricity and 23% more water than the Electrolux 700 Series it tested)
  • No Wi-Fi, a slower 1,160 rpm spin and a door that only opens one way (CNET)
  • After the first year, the 10-year coverage is parts only, so you pay for labour

Best for small spaces

Bosch 300 Series WGA14400UC Compact Washer

WGA14400UC (White). The same model number is used in Canada and the U.S.

Score 6.8/10

CA$1349.98

Price checked October 5, 2026

Pros

  • Wirecutter's runner-up compact washer: a short accelerated cycle and a fast 1,400 rpm spin that wrings out more water before a slow ventless dryer
  • Only 23.5 in. wide and 24.25 in. deep, so it fits closets and condo nooks, and it stacks with the matching WPA12100UC dryer
  • Efficient (84 kWh/yr, ENERGY STAR) and quiet (52 dBA washing, per Bosch). Wirecutter says Bosch's service fleet is easy to book

Cons

  • Needs a 208/240 V outlet, not a regular 120 V plug (it can share the matching dryer's supply)
  • About 2.2 cu. ft., less than half the capacity of the full-size picks, and no Wi-Fi
  • Few owner reviews, and Wirecutter lists a short warranty (U.S. terms)

What to buy

Measure first. Full-size washers here are 27 in. wide, but check the depth with the door open (55 in. for the LG front-loader, about 51 in. for the Maytag) and the height with the lid open (57 in. for the LG top-loader). Measure doorways and stairs too. If you're short on space, a stacked 24-inch compact pair like the Bosch 300 Series fits where a full-size pair won't, but check for a 240 V outlet first. Then match the washer to how you do laundry. For the best cleaning, get the Electrolux ELFW7637AW. For fast cycles and app control, get the LG WM4100HWA. For big loads with less bending, at the lowest price, get the LG WT8200CW top-loader. For heavy-duty stains and 10 years of motor and basket parts coverage, get the Maytag MHW5630HW. Before you buy, check the price at two or three retailers, since several laundry promotions end in early October (Trail's Bosch sale runs until 7 October 2026, and LG.ca is running laundry-pair offers). Ask whether delivery, installation, new hoses and haul-away are included. Register your washer for the full warranty, and keep the receipt. To keep a front-loader healthy, use HE detergent sparingly (about 1 to 2 tablespoons for most loads, per Wirecutter's experts), wipe the gasket every few weeks, run a tub-clean cycle a few times a year, leave the door ajar, and clean the pump filter if you see drain errors. Don't overload any washer, because repair technicians say overloading wears out bearings. Prices change often, so check before you buy.

How we chose

We started from current tested recommendations: Reviewed's best washing machines (2026), CNET's best washing machines (updated 24 July 2026), Wirecutter's best washing machines (updated 17 August 2026) and best compact washers (updated 6 August 2026), and Consumer Reports' public summaries of its 2026 ratings and brand reliability surveys. Protégez-Vous tested 73 washers sold in Canada (recommendations dated 19 February 2026), but its model-level results are for subscribers only, so we couldn't use them. We confirmed each model is sold in Canada under its Canadian model number through Canadian Appliance Source, The Brick, Leon's, Trail Appliances, Appliance Canada, Quebec dealers and the brands' .ca sites. Each washer gets two scores out of 10. The performance score covers stain removal, fabric care, cycle times, capacity and efficiency. The ownership score covers the average customer rating and number of ratings at Canadian retailers; recurring faults (drain pumps, door locks, leaks, gasket mould, error codes, control boards, bearings); recalls on Health Canada's recalls site; the Canadian warranty (parts, labour, motor and drum or tub coverage) and how service works here; and, where relevant, the smart app. The overall score is 50% performance and 50% ownership, and each washer gets a reliability verdict: Strong, Average, Weak, or Not confirmed when we couldn't find enough Canadian ratings or owner reports. Repair-forum posts and owner reviews are anecdotes, not failure rates, so we look for patterns. Some Canadian retailer review counts are pooled across sellers and may include U.S. reviews. We allow no more than two picks from one brand. We list a price only when we saw it on a Canadian retailer page, with the date we checked. Energy figures come from the brand or retailer listing, and we didn't check NRCan's EnerGuide database model by model. Anything we couldn't confirm is marked as not confirmed. Best Buy Canada wasn't checked, and Home Depot Canada's pages wouldn't load for us.

FAQ

Which washing machines are most reliable, and what warranty do you get in Canada?

Consumer Reports' owner surveys rate LG the most reliable brand for front-load and high-efficiency top-load washers. Speed Queen and LG lead for agitator top-loaders, and Electrolux, LG and Miele lead for compact front-loaders. Most washers sold in Canada come with only one year of parts and labour. The long coverage you see advertised is usually parts only: LG covers the direct-drive motor for 10 years and the drum for 3, Maytag covers the motor and wash basket for 10 years, and Electrolux covers the motor for 10 years and the tub for life. In Quebec, retailers also list a 5-year warranty of good working order under the Consumer Protection Act. Costco.ca extends manufacturer warranties to 2 years. Register your washer, keep the receipt, and check Health Canada's recalls site (recalls-rappels.canada.ca) with your model and serial number. We found no recent recalls for any of our picks.

Front-load or top-load: which should I buy?

Front-loaders clean better, are gentler on clothes, use less water, spin faster and can be stacked. The Electrolux uses 85 kWh a year with an IWF of 3.2, while the LG WT8200CW top-loader has an IWF of 4.3, and CNET estimates the top-loader uses about 83% more water than its Electrolux pick. Top-loaders cost less, are easier on your back and are less prone to smells. If you go front-load, wipe the gasket and leave the door ajar between loads.

Why are Canadian capacities bigger than U.S. ones for the same washer?

Canada usually lists capacity using the IEC method, while U.S. listings use the DOE method, which gives a smaller number for the same drum. The Electrolux ELFW7637AW and Maytag MHW5630HW are 5.2 cu. ft. IEC and 4.5 cu. ft. DOE. LG rates the WT8200CW at 5.8 cu. ft. in Canada and 5.0 cu. ft. in the U.S. Compare washers using the same rating method.

Do I need a special outlet for a compact washer?

Sometimes. The Bosch 300 Series WGA14400UC needs a 208/240 V circuit, like a dryer, though it can plug into the matching Bosch dryer's supply so you only need one outlet. Some compact washers, such as the Miele WXD160 and Electrolux ELFW4222AW, plug into a normal 120 V outlet. Check the installation guide before you buy, especially in a condo.

Is an all-in-one washer-dryer worth it?

Only if you truly have room for just one machine and no dryer vent. CNET liked the LG WM6998H all-in-one for its cleaning and controls, but drying is slow, it doesn't dry fully when overloaded, and you can't wash one load while drying another. If one half breaks, both stop working. We didn't score an all-in-one this time, because we couldn't confirm Canadian pricing and owner data within our limit of two picks per brand.
