Best refrigerators in Canada (2026): French-door, counter-depth, top-, bottom-freezer and side-by-side picks scored on reliability
The best fridge isn't the one with the most features. It's the one that keeps your food cold for a decade, with a compressor, warranty and service network you can count on in Canada.

A fridge runs 24 hours a day for 10 years or more, so reliability matters more here than with almost any other appliance. Consumer Reports' 2026 survey estimates that 30% of fridges with ice makers will have a problem by year five. The most common faults are ice makers and dispensers, and compressor failures are the most expensive. We only included fridges sold in Canada, under Canadian model numbers, with capacities in cubic feet and prices we saw on Canadian retailer pages on 5 October 2026. On sale, our picks run from about $1,145 for a 30-inch top-freezer to $2,045 for a 30-inch bottom-freezer. Half of each score covers what a fridge is like to own: Canadian customer ratings, known defects and recalls, and the Canadian warranty and service. That's why our list leans towards simpler fridges. Three of our five picks have no factory ice maker. The LG LRFLC2706S is our top pick for its capacity, design and smart features, but Consumer Reports' compressor findings for LG French-door fridges, and the fact that LG Canada stops covering labour after year 1, keep its reliability verdict at Average.

LG LRFLC2706S Smart Counter-Depth MAX French Door Refrigerator · LRFLC2706S (Canadian model; Wirecutter's pick is the LRFLC2706 series)
The LG LRFLC2706S is Wirecutter's top French-door fridge. It fits 26.5 cu. ft. into a cabinet less than 25 in. deep, so it looks almost built in while holding as much as a standard-depth fridge. It's quiet, has a one-hand internal water dispenser, an ice maker and Wi-Fi, and Leon's had it at $1,749 when we checked, with 4.4 out of 5 from 669 ratings. LG Canada covers the compressor for 10 years. It isn't perfect. That long coverage is parts only after year 1, Consumer Reports says LG French-door fridges are more likely than most brands to have compressor problems, and it uses 632 kWh a year. If reliability matters more to you than capacity or features, look at the GE GBE17HYRFS (no ice maker, $1,195) for a smaller kitchen or the LG LTCS20020S top-freezer ($1,145), the style with the fewest repairs in Wirecutter's survey.

LG LRFLC2706S Smart Counter-Depth MAX French Door Refrigerator
LRFLC2706S (Canadian model; Wirecutter's pick is the LRFLC2706 series)
Score 7.7/10
CA$1749.00
Price checked October 5, 2026
Pros
- Wirecutter's top French-door pick (updated 1 July 2026): 26.5 cu. ft. in a cabinet only 24 7/8 in. deep, so it looks built in without giving up much space
- Quiet, with an internal water dispenser you can use with one hand, an ice maker in the freezer, and Wi-Fi through LG ThinQ for alerts and diagnostics
- LG Canada covers the compressor for 10 years (parts), and Leon's had it at $1,749 against a $3,439 compare-at price
Cons
- Consumer Reports' 2026 survey says LG French-door fridges are more likely than most brands to have compressor problems, and LG settled a Canadian class action over linear-compressor failures in older models (this model isn't on the covered list)
- After year 1, LG Canada covers parts only, so you pay for labour on a compressor or sealed-system repair. Wirecutter rates LG's customer service below GE's
- No sliding shelf for tall bottles, it's 70 1/4 in. tall to the hinge, and it comes in one finish. It uses 632 kWh a year, more than every other pick here
Best counter-depth
GE GBE17HYRFS Counter-Depth Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator
GBE17HYRFS (Canadian model, same as the U.S. model)
Score 7.5/10
CA$1195.00
Price checked October 5, 2026
Pros
- Wirecutter's best counter-depth bottom-freezer fridge (updated 20 April 2026). It's 27 in. deep with handles, so it really does sit nearly flush, and it's only 31 1/8 in. wide
- No ice maker and no dispenser, which removes the parts most likely to fail in a fridge. Edge-to-edge glass shelves and three freezer drawers
- One of the cheapest true near-counter-depth fridges: $1,195 at Leon's and The Brick, and it uses 454 kWh a year (ENERGY STAR)
Cons
- 17.7 cu. ft. total, and the freezer holds only 4.7 cu. ft., so it suits smaller households or anyone who doesn't keep much frozen food
- No ice maker, water line or Wi-Fi
- GE Canada's standard refrigerator warranty is 1 year. Its published Canadian warranty adds 5 years of sealed-system coverage only for GE Profile and Café models
Best top-freezer value
LG LTCS20020S 30-inch Top-Freezer Refrigerator
LTCS20020S (Canadian model; Canadian Appliance Source says it's similar to LTCS20020V)
Score 7.6/10
CA$1145.00
Price checked October 5, 2026
Pros
- Wirecutter's energy-efficient top-freezer pick, and Consumer Reports named LG its best top-freezer brand for 2026. It uses only 387 kWh a year (ENERGY STAR)
- Top-freezers had by far the fewest service calls and repairs in Wirecutter's 2023 reader survey. This one has no ice maker as standard (the LK65C kit is optional)
- 20.2 cu. ft. in a 30-inch opening for $1,145, with a Smart Inverter compressor that LG Canada covers for 10 years (parts)
Cons
- Classic top-freezer layout: the crispers are at the bottom, there are only two fixed shelves, and there's no water dispenser
- It's 33.5 in. deep, so it sticks out past the counters
- Labour is covered for 1 year only, and LG's service reputation trails GE's and Whirlpool's
Best bottom-freezer
Whirlpool WRB329RFBM 30-inch Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator
WRB329RFBM (Canadian listing; same UPC as the U.S. model. Wirecutter's pick is the closely related WRB329DMB)
Score 7.1/10
CA$2045.00
Price checked October 5, 2026
Pros
- Wirecutter's best 30-inch bottom-freezer pick (as the WRB329DMB). Wirecutter says Whirlpool scores well for repairability, and bottom-freezers had the highest owner satisfaction in its surveys
- 18.7 cu. ft. in a 30-inch opening, with all fresh food at or above waist height, SpillGuard glass shelves, humidity-controlled crispers and an ethylene-absorbing FreshFlow filter
- ENERGY STAR. Its Canadian EnerGuide label shows 397 kWh a year
Cons
- Expensive for what it is: $2,045 at The Brick, which is more than our side-by-side pick. Leon's showed conflicting prices of $1,649 and $2,049
- Has an ice maker (Canadian Appliance Source), which is the most failure-prone part of any fridge. No water dispenser or Wi-Fi
- Whirlpool's Canadian warranty document lists only 1 year of parts and labour, with no longer sealed-system coverage
Best side-by-side
Whirlpool WRS315SNHM 36-inch Side-by-Side Refrigerator
WRS315SNHM (Canadian model, same as the U.S. model)
Score 7.1/10
CA$1995.00
Price checked October 5, 2026
Pros
- Wirecutter's side-by-side pick if you don't need a dispenser (updated 1 July 2026). Without an ice maker or door dispenser, it avoids the parts that fail most
- 25.1 cu. ft., with the biggest freezer among Wirecutter's side-by-side picks (9.61 cu. ft. in Canada) and narrow doors that suit tight kitchens
- Widely sold in Canada at $1,995, with 4.2 out of 5 from about 1,560 ratings at both Leon's and The Brick
Cons
- Wirecutter says only one fridge shelf adjusts, the temperature controls are basic, and it isn't as easy to use as its other side-by-side picks
- Not ENERGY STAR certified (Wirecutter), and we couldn't find a Canadian kWh figure
- No ice maker or water dispenser as standard (an optional kit is available), and Whirlpool Canada lists only 1 year of parts and labour

What to buy
Measure first: the opening's width, height (including the hinge) and depth, plus the depth with the doors open, the clearance needed for the doors to swing, and every doorway and staircase on the way in. The LG LRFLC2706S is 70 1/4 in. tall to the hinge, which can clash with cabinets above. Then match the style to how you live. Get the LG LRFLC2706S for a large 36-inch French-door fridge with a near-built-in look. Get the GE GBE17HYRFS for a slim, flush fit and fewer parts to break. Get the LG LTCS20020S for the lowest running costs in a 30-inch top-freezer. Get the Whirlpool WRB329RFBM for produce at eye level in a 30-inch opening. Get the Whirlpool WRS315SNHM for a narrow-door 36-inch side-by-side without a dispenser. Before you buy, check prices at two or three retailers. The Brick prices vary by region, and promotions on Leon's pages end on 7 October 2026 (LG LTCS20020S) and 28 October 2026 (GE GBE17HYRFS, Whirlpool WRS315SNHM). Ask whether delivery, haul-away, door reversal and water-line installation are included. Because most Canadian fridge warranties cover labour for only one year, think about a retailer protection plan for an expensive model with an ice maker, register the fridge with the manufacturer, keep the receipt, and vacuum the condenser coils once a year.
How we chose
We started from current recommendations: Wirecutter's best refrigerators (updated 23 February 2026), best French-door refrigerators (updated 1 July 2026), best counter-depth refrigerators (updated 20 April 2026) and best side-by-side refrigerators (updated 1 July 2026), plus Consumer Reports' public summaries of its 2026 brand reliability survey (updated 22 September 2026) and its 2026 Best Brands list. CNET's refrigerator guide (last updated June 2025) only collects retailer ratings, so we used it for background only. Consumer Reports' lab scores for temperature consistency and model-level reliability are for members only, and so are Protégez-Vous' results from its test of 121 fridges sold in Quebec, so we couldn't use either at the model level. Reviewed's refrigerator guide wouldn't load for us. We confirmed each model is sold in Canada under its Canadian model number through Leon's, The Brick, Canadian Appliance Source, Appliance Canada and GE Appliances Canada. Whirlpool.ca and LG.ca blocked our checks. Each fridge gets two scores out of 10. The performance score covers usable space and layout, temperature management where tested results are public, energy use and features. The ownership score covers the average rating and number of ratings at Canadian retailers; recurring faults, with extra weight on compressors and ice makers; Health Canada recalls; the Canadian warranty, separating parts-only from parts-and-labour coverage; and service and parts in Canada. The overall score is 50% performance and 50% ownership, and each fridge gets a reliability verdict: Strong, Average, Weak, or Not confirmed. Retailer review counts at Leon's and The Brick often look pooled across sellers and may include U.S. reviews. Owner complaints and forum posts are anecdotes, not failure rates. We allow no more than two picks from one brand. We list a price only when we saw it on a Canadian retailer page, with the date we checked. Energy figures come from Canadian retailer listings or Canadian EnerGuide labels, because NRCan's searchable database wouldn't load for us. Best Buy Canada wasn't checked, and Home Depot Canada and Costco.ca weren't checked for this guide. Anything we couldn't confirm is marked as not confirmed.
FAQ
Which refrigerators are most reliable, and what warranty do you get in Canada?
Simpler is more reliable. Consumer Reports' 2026 survey says ice makers and dispensers are the most common problems, and estimates that 30% of fridges with ice makers will have a problem within five years. Wirecutter's reader survey found top-freezer fridges have by far the fewest repairs. CR's 2026 best brands are LG for top-freezers, Bosch for French-door fridges and GE for side-by-sides. CR also found LG French-door, side-by-side and bottom-freezer models are more likely than most brands to have compressor problems, and it rates Samsung French-door fridges poorly for reliability. Most fridges sold in Canada come with only one year of parts and labour. LG Canada adds 7 years on the sealed system and 10 years on the compressor, but for parts only, so you pay for labour. GE Appliances Canada adds 5 years of sealed-system coverage, labour included, only on Profile and Café models. Whirlpool's Canadian warranty document lists 1 year. Quebec buyers also get the legal warranty of good working order. Register your fridge, keep the receipt, and check recalls-rappels.canada.ca. We found no current Health Canada recall for any of our picks.
What is the LG refrigerator compressor class action in Canada, and does it affect these models?
Prins v. LG Electronics Canada covered certain LG fridges with linear compressors, produced between 30 January 2014 and 27 May 2024, that stopped cooling. The Ontario Superior Court approved the settlement on 27 May 2024, and claims closed on 25 October 2024. Neither of our LG picks (LRFLC2706S, LTCS20020S) is on the covered-model list. LG doesn't admit fault under the settlement, but Consumer Reports' 2026 survey still flags compressor problems in LG French-door, side-by-side and bottom-freezer fridges. That's why our LG French-door pick gets an Average reliability verdict, not Strong.
What does counter-depth really mean?
A true counter-depth fridge is about 24 to 25 in. deep, not counting the handles, and sits flush with standard 24-inch counters. Most freestanding fridges sold as counter-depth are deeper. The LG LRFLC2706S cabinet is 24 7/8 in. deep but 29 1/4 in. with the doors, while the GE GBE17HYRFS is 27 in. deep including its handles. Standard-depth fridges like our top-freezer and side-by-side picks are about 33 to 34 in. deep. Wirecutter suggests looking for models under about 28 in. deep including the doors if you want a flush look.
Should I get an ice maker and water dispenser?
Only if you'll use them. Consumer Reports and Wirecutter both say ice makers and dispensers are the main point of failure in modern fridges. They need a water line and a filter change about every six months, and through-the-door dispensers take up space. Three of our picks (the GE GBE17HYRFS, LG LTCS20020S and Whirlpool WRS315SNHM) have no factory ice maker. The LG and Whirlpool can take an optional kit.
How much electricity does a fridge use?
Among our picks, the LG LTCS20020S top-freezer uses 387 kWh a year, the Whirlpool WRB329RFBM's Canadian EnerGuide label shows 397 kWh, the counter-depth GE GBE17HYRFS uses 454 kWh, and the big LG LRFLC2706S French-door uses 632 kWh. As a rough guide, top-freezers are the most efficient type and side-by-sides the least. Look for the ENERGY STAR mark and compare EnerGuide kWh/yr figures, which are what Canadian labels show.
