The federal government is committing $100 million to advance offshore wind development in Nova Scotia, the latest move in Ottawa's bid to turn the Atlantic coast's strong winds into clean electricity exports.

The announcement came Thursday in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, from Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, according to a Natural Resources Canada release. The funding is meant to help move projects like the province's Wind West clean energy initiative from concept to development by attracting the private investment needed to build them.

What Wind West is

The federal release says Canada's east coast has some of the strongest winds in the world, and frames offshore wind as a generational economic opportunity for Nova Scotia and the region — new export revenue for clean electricity, plus jobs. The announcement builds on the Atlantic Economic Panel's call to develop the region's energy resources and strengthen electricity connections between provinces, and sits alongside the new Churchill Falls agreement, which the government described as the largest clean energy investment in North American history.

Why it matters

The release argues that building out new clean electricity brings energy security, thousands of job opportunities and lower-cost power to Canadian homes and businesses. For a government pushing its Team Canada Strong energy agenda — the same day it announced more than $430 million for apprenticeship training and $50 million for food-sector innovation — Wind West is one of the flagship projects meant to show the country can build major projects at speed.
